Selection Criteria for Custom Foot Orthotics

If you or your family physician feel that custom foot orthotics may be required, it's vital to consult an expert. The following selection criteria will guide you to a qualified professional.
1. The prescriber and provider/dispenser are approved by your extended health care insurance company (for insured individuals).
gait analysis casting manufacturing fitting education
2. A comprehensive biomechanical evaluation is performed by the provider.
The biomechanical evaluation should include the following steps:

* Medical history

* Examination (complete hands on evaluation of the lower limb including foot structure, alignment, strength, range of motion and identification of abnormalities)

* Gait analysis (observation while walking)

* Orthotic evaluation (determination of treatment options and clear explanation of how the treatment will address your specific needs)

* Casting of both feet (a cast is a model of the foot and is the medium by which the contours of the foot are captured in order to fabricate a truly custom-made orthotic. Accepted casting techniques include: foam box casting, plaster slipper casting, contact digitizing and laser scanning)
3. If required, the orthotics will be manufactured specifically to your needs
Custom-made foot orthotics should be constructed completely from raw materials fabricated directly to the casts for your feet. Turnaround time can be as little as 24 hours but is more typically one or two weeks.

4. The orthotics are appropriately dispensed
When you pick up your orthotics, the provider should ensure the orthoses fit you and your footwear and you should be evaluated while walking with the orthotics. The follow-up process should be explained.

5. Education is provided regarding the orthotics and footwear
The provider should explain the break-in time, how long the orthotics can be expected to last, footwear fit and features, possible problems you may encounter and follow-up available.
